ALIORE, Worldwide workshops - Tango tour in Buenos Aires
Tango Immersion Programme in Buenos Aires
10 days - 9 nights

At the end of the 19th century, Argentina welcomed immigrants, mainly from Spain and Italy who soon mixed in with the local population. As a result, various styles of music and dance such as Cuban habanera, Spanish contradanza, African candombé and especially the Argentinian milonga combined .
The combination of these different sounds, generated by a nostalgia for a happier past and fear for an uncertain future, gave birth to Tango.
When the bandoneon, a portable organ with 69 tones, was invented in 1880, tango found its own sound and colour.
The tango was initially danced in the slums and the brothels of Buenos Aires with which it was quickly associated but the terribly masculine universe of the time even led men to tango with eachother.
The tango is danced in a very “corporal” way, it is provocative and explicit and a million miles away from puritanical morals , so it was rejected by polite society .
However, it was adopted by Parisian high society in the swinging 1920’s and soon spread around the world becoming symbolic of the Belle Epoque. Only then did Argentinian high society begin to take an interest.
Compared with the vast majority of ballroom dances, which contain few variations of basic dance steps, the basic tango step is the departure point for hundreds of different figures.
The stringing together of these figures is governed merely by the emotions of the moment which is what gives tango its marvellous spontaneity.
