Detailed programme

Join the Turtle and Mangrove Conservation Programme on Los Brasiles Island in Nicaragua

From day one, each participant attends a training session where lectures are given and the methods used are explained. Afterwards, the volunteer begins to take on the same duties as the rest of the staff, as well as taking turns in the kitchen and with cleaning duties, which allows them to experience daily life in a relatively isolated and remote location, such as the island of Los Brasiles.

Missions:

  1. Night patrols to protect turtles
  2. Turtle nest surveys
  3. Monitoring of hatcheries
  4. Mangrove reforestation
  5. Beach clean-ups
  6. Shifts in the kitchen and cleaning duties to experience daily life at the site
  7. Optional local activities: kayaking, sandboarding (outside the core conservation programme)
Dates

Currently available from July to January. Around September and October, the nesting season reaches its peak; there is therefore a lot of night-time activity with beach patrols, and the chances of spotting turtles are higher. However, this is also the height of the rainy season, which can be challenging for some people. In December and January, there are many hatchings of baby turtles and numerous releases of hatchlings are organised. This is a very pleasant time of year in terms of the weather, as it marks the start of the drier season.

Programme lasting at least two weeks (one week is possible, but two weeks are recommended).

Accommodation

The accommodation is located just a few metres from the coast. Rooms are shared by 3, 4 or 8 people, depending on availability. There are two buildings that can accommodate up to 26 people. If you would like a private room, the cost is 15$ per night.
