Detailed programme

Experience volunteering with Mapuche families in southern Chile, in the Araucanía region.

This programme invites you to discover and explore the village of Curarrehue in a simple and authentic way, sharing in the daily lives of Mapuche and farming families. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a living culture, through traditional expressions such as crafts, ancestral weaving, traditional games and local cuisine, prepared using produce from community gardens and the bountiful fruits of the native forests of Araucanía.


Activities on site:


1) Working in the vegetable garden and greenhouses

  1. Sowing plants
  2. Weeding
  3. Cleaning
  4. Checking on plants and vegetables

2) Looking after farm animals

  1. Feeding the sheep, horses, cows and small birds

3) Daily household chores

  1. Helping to bring in and stack firewood
  2. Cooking
  3. Washing up

Available all year round. However, we recommend visiting between September and March, as the weather is more favourable during this period..


Minimum stay: 1 week (7 days). Maximum stay: 15 days, but you can stay longer if you wish.

Location

The village of Curarrehue in the famous Araucanía region in southern Chile.

Price : 360,00 €

360€ per week and 310€ thereafter. The price includes three meals a day and accommodation.

Eligibility

  1. You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. You must have at least a basic knowledge of Spanish; an advanced level will enhance the experience.

Living Conditions

Host families provide three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are tailored as much as possible to your dietary preferences.

The Mapuche are the largest indigenous group in Chile; they account for almost 90% of the country’s indigenous population, with one million Chileans identifying with this culture. Known as the Araucans by the Spanish, the term ‘Mapuche’ means ‘people of the land’ in Mapudungun.
