Detailed programme

Immersion in an agroecological farm on the island of Nosy Komba

Nosy Komba, nicknamed Lemur Island, is remarkable for its rich natural environment and the resilience of its population. With over 5,000 inhabitants, most of whom are under the age of 18, the island's main sources of income are fishing, tourism and agriculture.
Over the years, food crops have often been replaced by monocultures (cocoa, coffee, vanilla, pepper, etc.), leading to soil erosion and forest decline. Poverty, lack of access to education and sustainable agricultural tools are putting additional pressure on natural resources.

In light of this observation, the AKIBA association has created a pilot farm aimed at experimenting with and promoting sustainable, reproducible agricultural practices that are beneficial to humans and the environment.

Agroforestry farm: This farm combines trees, crops and livestock on the same plot of land. Under the cover of trees, cocoa, coffee and vanilla plants coexist with pineapples, ginger, chillies and food crops. Diversified market gardening allows for near self-sufficiency in food, despite the slope and high rainfall.

The association also favours the use of local materials, accessible environmentally friendly techniques and the reappropriation of traditional knowledge.

AKIBA has also established a primary school for 70 children
