Located off the northwest coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Nosy Be is the country’s main tourist destination. Covering an area of 320.02 km², the island has approximately 73,010 inhabitants. Its name literally means “big island” in Malagasy. Known as Assada at the beginning of the colonial era in the 17th century, Nosy Be boasts a rich and fascinating history.
Ideally positioned between Africa and Asia, the island evokes adventure, escape, and discovery. It is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity: volcanic lakes, ylang-ylang plantations, rum distilleries, preserved coral reefs, and lush forests inhabited by iconic lemurs.
Nature and sea lovers will find a true paradise here, with many opportunities for swimming and underwater exploration alongside sea turtles, stingrays, and majestic manta rays. In May, the island comes alive with the Donia Music Festival, a major four-day cultural event celebrating music and traditions of the Indian Ocean.
